Dutch submersible maker U-Boat Worx has completed sea trials of its new Super Sub in the waters off Curaçao and is preparing to deliver it to its first client in the coming weeks.

The company tested the vessel’s speed, handling and safety systems during the programme, confirming it is ready for use.

The development matters as demand is growing for high-end private submersibles, especially for use on luxury yachts and underwater tourism.

The Super Sub is designed to be the fastest private submersible, with a top speed of around 9 knots, and some reports putting it close to 10 knots.

This is much faster than most small submersibles, which usually operate between 1 and 4 knots. It produces 100 kW of horizontal thrust and can move up and down in the water at angles of up to 45 degrees, making it easier to navigate underwater terrain.

The sub can carry three people, including one pilot and two passengers. It can dive to a depth of 300 metres and has a range of up to 10 nautical miles. It is powered by a 62 kWh battery, which allows it to operate for around 8 hours.

During the trials, engineers tested propulsion, manoeuvrability, controls and onboard systems.

The vessel is fitted with avionics-style controls and a sonar system that scans the seabed and adjusts its path. It also has a maximum depth protection feature to prevent it from going too deep.

The sub includes multiple safety systems, including redundant life support that can keep occupants safe for up to 96 hours in case of emergency.

The Super Sub is built differently from traditional submersibles. Instead of only relying on thrust, it uses hydrodynamic lift through wing-like structures, allowing it to move more smoothly through the water, similar to how an aircraft moves in air.

This design helps it maintain stability while moving at higher speeds.

Inside, the sub has an acrylic pressure hull that gives passengers a near 360-degree view of the surroundings. The seating and cockpit layout are designed to give both the pilot and passengers a clear view during the dive.

The submersible is priced at about $5.75 million and is aimed at private buyers, including yacht owners. It is expected to be used for luxury underwater trips or personal exploration.

Compared to research submersibles, which focus on deep dives and long missions, this vessel is designed for speed, comfort and ease of use.
