Watch: China Unveils New Polar Exploration Icebreaker
Ji Di, China’s fourth research icebreaker, will soon join the country’s growing fleet of icebreakers for polar exploration. The ship, presently being built at Guangzhou Shipyard International, will be delivered in the second quarter of 2024 and will demonstrate China’s dedication to developing its polar research capabilities.
Ji Di has dimensions of 89 meters by 17.8 meters by 5,600 tonnes, making it suitable for conducting in-depth research in polar regions. With a 26,000-kilometer range and an excellent 80-day at-sea endurance, the vessel can perform prolonged autonomous operations without frequent resupplies.

With a capacity of 60 crew members, the icebreaker can transport underwater autonomous robots and drones to explore the deep polar seabed. This improves China’s capacity to conduct extensive research missions in rugged and isolated polar regions.
Concurrent construction of Ji Di and another icebreaking research vessel at Guangzhou Shipyard, reportedly named Tan Suo San Hao, is underway. With a length of 103 meters and a displacement of roughly 9,200 tons, Tan Suo San Hao is larger than Ji Di and is currently under construction. It can accommodate 80 crew members.
It is expected that Ji Di will be delivered in 2025, making four Chinese research icebreakers in total. China now can carry out year-round scientific missions in the polar areas, which are strategically crucial. China has established itself as a leading force in polar research by conducting 40 scientific missions in the Antarctic since 1984 and 12 in the Arctic since 1999. The nation has also collected a significant amount of environmental and scientific data.
