USS Truman Strike Group Returns Home After Intense 8-Month Deployment
The USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group of the United States Navy arrived at its homeport in Norfolk, Virginia, on June 1, following an eight-month deployment in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation. The strike group left in September 2024 and spent months conducting missions across Europe, the Middle East, and the Red Sea.
The group included the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) aircraft carrier, the Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64), and two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers- USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) and USS Stout (DDG 55), all part of Destroyer Squadron 28. Carrier Air Wing 1, consisting of nine squadrons, was also embarked on the carrier.
During the deployment, the strike group sailed through Europe and the Middle East, carrying out various operations such as joint exercises with NATO allies and combat missions in the Red Sea region.
Rear Admiral Sean Bailey, commander of the strike group, praised the sailors and equipment for their outstanding performance throughout the deployment. He expressed pride in their readiness and commitment and highlighted the joy of reuniting the crew with their families and friends after the long mission.
In the North Sea, the strike group took part in NATO’s Neptune Strike 24-2 exercises, working alongside naval forces from Portugal, Norway, and Italy. The Italian frigate ITS Carabiniere (F 593) also operated with the strike group during this period.
The group made several port visits in Europe, including stops in Norway, Finland, Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, Croatia, and Greece. These visits supported diplomatic efforts to promote stability and peace through a visible naval presence.
On February 1, while supporting U.S. Africa Command from the Red Sea, the strike group conducted a significant airstrike targeting ISIS operatives in Somalia, dropping a total of 124,000 pounds of ordnance.
Captain Leslie Mintz, commander of Carrier Air Wing 1, praised the skill and professionalism of the aviators during strikes against Houthi forces in Yemen. She also credited the maintenance, ordnance handling, administrative, and logistics teams for keeping aircraft operational and ready for continuous missions, ensuring the safety of pilots and the effectiveness of air operations.
In March, the strike group launched Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles and carried out precise airstrikes for over 50 days as part of U.S. Central Command’s Operation Rough Rider. These operations aimed to weaken Iran-backed Houthi militias in Yemen and safeguard commercial shipping routes from threats.
Captain Chris Hill, commanding officer of the USS Harry S. Truman, recognised the sailors’ dedication and perseverance through tough conditions during the deployment. He expressed honour in leading such a committed team and bringing them safely home.
Over the course of the deployment, the strike group flew more than 13,000 sorties and logged 25,000 flight hours. Combined, the ships travelled over 240,000 nautical miles. The strike group’s primary mission focused on sustained combat operations, maintaining forward presence, and exercising sea control and power projection.
