Unknown Projectile Strikes Tanker Off Fujairah, Causing Minor Structural Damage
A tanker anchored about 23 nautical miles east of Fujairah has reported being hit by an unknown projectile, according to UK Maritime Trade Operations.
The incident happened late Monday night and caused minor structural damage to the vessel.
No crew members were injured and no pollution has been reported.
The tanker reported the strike shortly after 2300 GMT while it was at anchor off Fujairah, which is a key oil storage and bunkering hub in the United Arab Emirates.
Early reports said the vessel was hit by an unknown object that damaged part of its structure.
In a later update, the vessel’s company security officer said initial findings suggest the ship was likely struck by falling debris from aerial interceptions nearby, rather than a direct attack.
Based on this, UKMTO has reclassified the case as “suspicious activity.” All crew onboard were confirmed safe, and there was no environmental impact.
Authorities are still investigating what happened. Ships in the area have been advised to stay alert and report any unusual activity to UKMTO.
The incident comes shortly after two separate attacks on Fujairah’s oil infrastructure.
Videos shared online on March 14 showed large smoke plumes near the terminal, and local authorities later confirmed another drone attack on March 16.
Fujairah is an important hub for global oil trade. It is the endpoint of the Habshan-Fujairah pipeline, which allows crude oil to be exported without passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Because of this, the port plays a key role in keeping oil supplies moving even during disruptions in the region.
