The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the USS George Washington (CVN 73), completed its Flight Deck Certification (abbreviated FDC) on 30 June following a robust evaluation process. The certification marks a significant milestone in the carrier’s return to complete operational status, which took place at the Naval Station Norfolk.

Flight Deck Certification is a rigorous assessment of the carrier’s capacity to launch as well as recover aircraft safely and securely in varying conditions, including day and night operations. The FDC process is crucial in providing operational continuity and proficiency training for carrier crew members.

The USS George Washington went through a demanding testing phase for three days, conducting about 247 catapult launches day and night.

These trials involved a team of inspection experts from the Commander of the Naval Air Forces Atlantic (abbreviated CNAL) assessing the abilities of the carrier’s air department for firefighting and flight deck casualties.

The ship also got its fuel system certification and carried out additional carrier qualifications supporting the Carrier Air Wing One (CVW-1).

With the certification, the air wing pilots can successfully embark on additional carrier proficiency and qualifications drills specially designed to prepare squadrons and carriers for operations.

The fourth US Navy vessel titled after the country’s first president, USS George Washington, was reportedly commissioned on 4 July 1992. Such a unique nuclear-powered aircraft carrier can well-support a flight group comprising more than 60 aircraft and introduce and recover planes while moving at high speed.
