U.S. Navy Takes Delivery Of Future USS Robert E. Simanek (ESB 7)

The U.S. Navy officially welcomed the future USS Robert E. Simanek (ESB 7) on September 12, 2024.

The ship was named in honour of Private First Class Robert Ernest Simanek, who received the Medal of Honour for his bravery during the Korean War.

In 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower awarded him the prestigious Medal of Honor, the highest award for valour in the U.S.

The future USS Robert E. Simanek (ESB 7) is the latest addition to the Expeditionary Sea Base (ESB) class, known for its ability to support a wide range of military operations.

The ESB class includes assets designed for Airborne Mine Countermeasures, Crisis Response Force Sea Basing, Intelligence Surveillance, Reconnaissance, Special Operations Forces and Unmanned Aviation Systems.

The ESB class ships have a large flight deck to accommodate V-22 Osprey aircraft, aviation facilities, command and control systems, hangars and mission decks.

Tim Roberts, the Strategic and Theater Sealift program manager at the Program Executive Office Ships, expressed his excitement over the ship’s delivery.

According to Roberts, the ESB class ships are crucial for supporting fleet operations. The vessels serve as mobile sea-based platforms that improve the deployment of equipment, military personnel and warfighting capabilities.

The future USS Hector A. Cafferata Jr. (ESB 8), the next ship in line, is under construction at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company.

Program Executive Office Ships, one of the largest acquisition groups of the Department of Defense, manages the development and procurement of various types of vessels, including auxiliary ships, amphibious ships and craft, destroyers, sealift ships, support ships, and special mission ships.
