Donald Trump has claimed that the United States has severely damaged Iran’s naval capability, stating that 58 Iranian vessels were destroyed in just two days during recent operations.

He made the remarks at the White House in Washington during an event.

The statement, if confirmed, could mark one of the largest reported naval losses in the region in recent decades.

Speaking at a ceremony, Trump said the US military had dealt a major blow to Iran’s naval forces.

He claimed that Iran “had a navy two weeks ago” but that it is now “at the bottom of the sea,” adding that 58 ships were taken out in a short span of two days.

He also stated that US forces faced little resistance and described the operation as unmatched in scale. According to him, Iran’s military systems, including air defence and radar, had also been neutralised.

However, there has been no independent confirmation of these claims so far.

Trump described the US Navy as the strongest in the world and said it was far ahead of others.

The US President repeated that stopping Iran from getting nuclear weapons remains a key goal. He said the US will not allow it and added that earlier administrations should have acted sooner on the issue.

A day earlier, Trump said the US is not planning to send ground troops to the Middle East. He said if such a decision were taken, it would not be publicly announced in advance.

He also spoke about US defence systems, claiming that 114 incoming rockets were recently intercepted successfully.

The situation is important for global shipping because it involves the Strait of Hormuz, where nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes every day.

Any military action in this area increases risks for commercial vessels, especially oil tankers.
