DNV and Ocean Sovereign have formed a groundbreaking alliance to get French registration for the Ocean Ark, a cutting-edge fish-farming vessel that will transform offshore aquaculture.

Through this partnership, DNV’s experience in quality control and risk management will be utilized to guarantee the vessel’s safe deployment by French laws.

The Ocean Ark is a revolutionary aquacultural concept created by the UK firm Ocean Sovereign in association with Ocean Arks Technology.

The vessel complies with IMO, Marpol, and Solas rules. It has a proprietary self-cleaning trimaran superstructure and is 174 meters long and 64 meters wide. It has a 450-ton feed storage capacity, a 5,000-ton fish production capacity per cycle, and a 25-day autonomous runtime.

The Ocean Ark drifts with fish shoals and natural flows, safeguarding the aquatic life, crew, and the ecosystem. It was built with a low density to navigate high offshore waters.

Essential responsibilities under DNV’s purview include operational integrity assurance, certification of maritime systems, and vessel classification. The partnership addresses serious dangers to traditional aquaculture, such as storms, algae blooms, and marine heat waves.

The partners desire to protect fish stocks and coastal habitats while improving fish welfare and productivity by deploying the Ocean Ark away from these threats.

France presents an ideal environment for implementing unique aquaculture systems. It has one of the world’s largest maritime exclusive economic zones and Europe’s largest salmon market.

Agreements are in place with well-known French fishing and aquaculture partners to further solidify the project’s position in the area.

The CEO of Ocean Sovereign, Zeyd Fassi Fehri, emphasizes the value of DNV’s experience in guaranteeing the secure deployment of ships registered in France. He highlights that a cross-industry strategy combining offshore technology and fish farming is required to succeed in offshore fish production.

Ocean Sovereign’s long-term goal is to operate a fleet of vessels capable of generating 120,000 tons for the US and European markets in five years. This objective aligns with the company’s commitment to innovation and environmentally friendly practices in the aquaculture sector.
