First Indian Seafarer Killed In U.S-Iran War As Oil Tanker Struck By Missile Off Oman
An indian seafarer lost his life in the exchange of missile strikes off the Coast of Oman, becoming the first Indian National to be killed in the US-Iran war.
The mariner was onboard an oil tanker called MKD Vyom, a Marshall-Islands Flagged Ship, sailing off the coast of Oman.
The tanker was struck by a projectile from a bomb-carrying drone boat, leading to an onboard explosion and a massive fire.
Omani authorities are not sure about who launched the attack, but it happened amidst heavy military exchanges in the region.
The Indian seafarer died inside the engine room of the tanker, per reports.
Analysts warn that such attacks might disrupt global oil transport.
Another tanker, Skylight, was hit near Musandam’s Khasab Port on the same day. It was manned by a 20-member crew, including 15 Indians and 5 Iranians, all of whom were rescued.
These attacks are the first direct hits on vessels close to Oman since the conflict has spilt to the entire Middle East, especially around the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil and gas passes every day.
As ships become targets of attack, the shipping industry is issuing warnings and guidelines amidst rising costs of insurance premiums and carriers avoiding the region.
Over 200 oil tankers and gas carriers are anchored outside the Hormuz amidst heightened tensions and the fear of being attacked.
Iran has issued warnings to vessels, stating that if any try to pass through, they could be targeted.
