Search Ends In Tragedy: No Survivors Recovered From Capsized Chinese Fishing Vessel
No survivors could be found in a weeklong search mission for 39 crew members on a Chinese fishing vessel that submerged in the central Indian Ocean. Seven bodies could be retrieved, the Chinese Ministry of Transport mentioned on Tuesday.
A large-scale search mission has covered the possible area of drifting of the victims. At around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, a week after the incident, the large-scale search mission started to downsize into a relatively small-scale one for 48 hours.
At noon on Tuesday, seven vessels had been operating on the site, and the capsized one continued drifting northeastward, explained the ministry.
However, on Sunday, three dead bodies were retrieved by China’s fishing vessels, and yet another body was recovered by divers from a cabin of a Sri Lankan warship. Three others were earlier confirmed to be dead.
The wrecked vessel, Lupeng Yuanyu 028, had onboard 39 crew members, including 17 sailors from China, 17 from Indonesia, and five from the Philippines. The accident took place at around 3 a.m. on 16 May.
