A Russian drone struck and damaged a Panama-flagged cargo vessel transporting corn near Ukraine’s Chornomorsk port in the Black Sea Odesa region late Wednesday, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The ship, identified as BULL, had just left the port and was sailing toward the Bosphorus Strait when the drone hit it. Officials said one crew member was injured in the attack.

The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority confirmed that the civilian vessel was hit while departing Chornomorsk port, but authorities did not provide details about how badly the ship was damaged.

According to the Ukrainian Navy, the drone attack injured one crew member on board the vessel.

Despite the injury, the ship’s captain refused evacuation or external assistance for the injured seafarer and decided to continue the voyage along its planned route toward the Bosphorus Strait.

No further details about the vessel’s condition or crew injuries were immediately available.

The ship was carrying corn, one of Ukraine’s key agricultural exports.

Ukraine remains one of the world’s largest grain exporters, and maritime routes across the Black Sea are critical for moving agricultural cargo to international markets.

About 90% of Ukraine’s exports move through the Odesa port hub, which includes the ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Pivdennyi. These ports handle large shipments of corn, wheat, and sunflower oil.

These ports serve as the country’s primary maritime gateway for agricultural products such as corn, wheat, and sunflower oil.

In recent months, Russia has increased attacks on Ukraine’s maritime infrastructure, according to Ukrainian officials. Ports and export logistics networks have frequently been targeted.

Strikes on port facilities and maritime routes have raised logistics and freight costs for Ukrainian exporters. Local businesses have been forced to lower commodity prices to remain competitive in global markets.

Damage to ships operating near Ukrainian ports has also raised security concerns for international shipping companies using the Black Sea trade corridor.
