Russia Deploys Its Most Powerful Nuclear Warship To Guard Arctic Nuclear Submarines

Russia’s only nuclear-powered surface warship is in the final stage of sea trials before returning to active service, with the Admiral Nakhimov expected to strengthen the country’s Arctic naval presence by protecting its fleet of nuclear ballistic missile submarines.

The warship is expected to join Russia’s Northern Fleet, which is responsible for about two-thirds of the country’s sea-based nuclear strike capability.

It will operate from the Arctic, close to the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom (GIUK) Gap, a key North Atlantic sea route that has long been strategically important for both Russia and NATO.

Its return comes as Russia continues to strengthen its strategic nuclear forces while the war in Ukraine continues.

At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced a 40-day campaign of long-range drone strikes targeting Russian military and strategic infrastructure.

The Admiral Nakhimov is the third ship of the Soviet-designed Project 1144 Orlan, known in the West as the Kirov class.

At around 28,000 tonnes and 251 metres long, it is the world’s only nuclear-powered surface warship that is not an aircraft carrier. It is also the largest operational surface combatant in service outside aircraft carriers.

The vessel entered service with the Soviet Northern Fleet in 1988 under the name Kalinin before being renamed Admiral Nakhimov in 1992.

It served for only a few years before being taken out of service after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the financial problems that followed.

The ship last sailed under its own power in July 1997. It entered the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk in 1999 for a modernisation programme that was expected to take only a few years but eventually lasted more than two decades.

Its first nuclear reactor was restarted in December 2024 and the second in February 2025. In August 2025, the ship returned to sea under its own power for factory sea trials in the White Sea, marking its first voyage in 28 years.

By December 2025, it had completed an initial round of trials and started its third series of sea tests. On May 31, 2026, the vessel left Sevmash again to begin the final phase of builder’s trials, a move confirmed the following day by Russia’s Ministry of Transport.

The ship has not yet entered active service. The ongoing trials are testing its weapons, radar and combat systems before it is officially accepted by the Russian Navy. Delivery is expected no earlier than 2026, although the programme has faced repeated delays.

Once commissioned, the Admiral Nakhimov is expected to become the flagship of Russia’s Northern Fleet and mainly operate in Arctic waters.

Its main mission will be to protect Russia’s sea-based nuclear deterrent. Under Russian military doctrine, the country’s ballistic missile submarines would move into protected waters in the Barents and Kara Seas during a conflict.

These protected areas, known as the “bastion,” are intended to keep enemy submarines, warships and aircraft away while ensuring Russia can maintain its ability to launch a retaliatory nuclear strike if needed.

According to the source material, U.S. intelligence estimates say around two-thirds of Russia’s sea-based nuclear deterrent is now based in the Arctic, with about seven ballistic missile submarines operating from the Kola Peninsula.

These include Delta IV and Borei-class submarines armed with Bulava and other submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

The bastion is protected by surface warships, attack submarines, maritime patrol aircraft, coastal missile batteries and radar systems. The Admiral Nakhimov is expected to become an important part of that defence network.

Its nuclear propulsion gives it an advantage in the Arctic, where ports and refuelling facilities are limited. The ship uses two nuclear reactors as part of a combined nuclear and steam propulsion system.

It can cruise at around 25 knots on reactor power alone for long periods without refuelling and can reach about 32 knots when its oil-fired steam turbines are used.

The vessel was also built for Arctic conditions, with heated equipment and enclosed working spaces for operations in extreme cold.

The Kirov class was originally designed during the Cold War as an anti-submarine platform before later being adapted to counter NATO aircraft carrier groups. Today, protecting Russia’s ballistic missile submarines has once again become one of its main roles.

The Admiral Nakhimov is expected to operate from Severomorsk, the headquarters of Russia’s Northern Fleet and one of the country’s most heavily protected naval bases.

The base, located above the Arctic Circle, is home to many of Russia’s nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarines.

Kola Bay remains ice-free throughout the year because of the warm North Atlantic Drift, allowing Russian warships to quickly reach the Barents Sea and the North Atlantic.

The base also provides direct access to the GIUK Gap, making it strategically important for naval operations in the region.
