PCG Rescues 13 Crew Members From Listing Cargo Ship Due To Heavy Storm
The general cargo ship Star Sabang began listing terrifyingly during a strong storm in the Sulu Sea, close to the Philippines. The 500 deadweight tonnages (dwt) ship ran aground south of Mindanao, on the western side of Bayangan Island, while travelling from Cebu to Zamboanga with a sizable cargo of 170 tons of cement.
The 321-foot-long ship faced severe winds and waves, which caused a sudden shift in its load. This change caused a considerable list, which brought the ship dangerously close to capsizing. Quick thinking on the captain’s part led to a coordinated effort involving the Coast Guard, MDRRMO Labason, and neighbouring municipalities as they requested aid from the Philippine Coast Guard.
Despite the turbulent circumstances, all 13 crew members were fortunately saved and transported safely to Bayangan Island, where they were waiting for transportation to Sidangan town.

Following the incident, the ship’s owner used the MT Star Danao, another vessel in their fleet, to begin towing. A circulating web video showed the Star Sabang turning onto its side, suggesting that the situation may be more dangerous than first reported despite indications of an ongoing towing operation. The fact that the vessel’s status was still being monitored highlighted the difficulties encountered in continuing to react to this tragedy in the southern Philippines.
