Largest U.S Shipyard Since World War II Announced By Trump With Up To $6.6 Billion In Investment
U.S. is getting a new shipyard, the biggest since the end of the Second World War. President Donald Trump announced the project, worth $6.6 billion, as he spoke at the site of the proposed yard in Maryland.
The Arsenal 2 would be constructed at Sparrows Point close to Baltimore and will manufacture components for Virginia-class submarines such as torpedo tubes and next-gen autonomous submarines.
The parts would then be sent to General Dynamics Electric Boat and HII Newport News Shipbuilding for final assembly, enabling simultaneous production of warships at different yards, reducing pressure on the two main yards building vessels for the U.S. Navy.
This would also quicken the process of shipbuilding, thereby helping the Navy meet its delivery schedules for warships, especially fast attack submarines.
Anduril, a defense technology company, is also pouring $3.7 billion into the new shipyard project covering two million square feet, equivalent to forty football fields across 187 acres. The yard would have assembly halls, fabrication spaces, production facilities and a 1200-feet graving dock.
The facility will come up at Sparrows Point, which was once a steelmaking and ship construction centre housing several complexes handling the work.
It is expected to generate over $2 billion in economic output and $312 million in wages, and would create over 3200 direct jobs and an additional 11,500 jobs, boosting the economy.
To integrate operations in one place, Anduril would use its industrial software called ArsenalOS, which would link different operations like material handling, management, assembly, documentation, inspections, and fabrication in one dashboard that would be updated automatically in real time.
This system will make it easy for hundreds of workers, welders, inspectors, pipelayers, electricians, and technicians working together to coordinate with each other and also track the work done.
