KR And HD Hyundai Collaborate To Develop XR-Based Ship Education & Training Program

Korea Register, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Hyundai Heavy Industries, and Hyundai Marine Solution have officially entered into a strategic collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to pioneer an innovative ship education and training program utilising extended reality (XR) technology. The signing ceremony was held at Ulsan, South Korea’s HD HHI Digital Convergence Center.

This innovative partnership aims to create a cutting-edge virtual reality ship representation. The partnership intends to combine complex 3D CAD models with 360-degree videos of actual vessels. The partnership also plans to develop ship trial content that, by utilising XR technology, will revolutionise crew training and education services.

Leading the way in developing maritime training materials, HD KSOE and HD HHI will work closely together to integrate HiDTS, their in-house digital twin solution, into KR’s ship familiarisation training and education platform, KR-Real 360. Modern training materials are expected to be delivered simultaneously with significant assistance from HD HMS.

The Executive Vice President and Head of the Digital Research Lab at HD KSOE, KWON Byounghun, expressed enthusiasm about the project and outlined its possible advantages: Customers will be able to react swiftly to changes in onboard operating systems, like decarbonisation and digitisation, through the realistic ship education and training system developed in this collaborative effort.

The Executive Vice President of KR’s R&D Division, Kim Daeheon, highlighted the significance of the partnership by stating it is meaningful for them to develop a solution suitable for shipyards and shipping companies, utilising KR’s capabilities in XR technology and HD Hyundai’s expertise in ship designing and verification. They also plan to enhance the technical assistance they provide customers to enable the proactive implementation of state-of-the-art digital technologies.

This innovative project could transform maritime education and improve industry adaptation. A new age of competency and efficiency in ship training and education is expected as the relationship develops.
