Iran Claims Capture Of Intact U.S Drone In Strait of Hormuz During Electronic Warfare Mission
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has claimed to have captured and landed a US drone intact west of the Strait of Hormuz.
The American MQM-170 Outlaw drone was seized after taking control of its guidance and control systems, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency. The Corps said that the drone was detected and identified during an offensive electronic warfare operation.
The MQM-170 is a reconnaissance and decoy drone made by the US company Griffon Aerospace. It is designed to simulate aerial threats, support air-defence training, and test aerial defence systems.
US Central Command has denied the claim. According to TRT World’s X post, the US Central Command attributed it to false reporting. Spokesman Tim Hawkins said the IRGC has “repeatedly lied out of desperation”. IRGC claimed that it shot down a US MQ-1 drone using a new air defence system, marking it as the 14th MQ-1 drone it says it has destroyed.
The IRGC Navy stated that the drone’s mission was to identify Iranian air defence systems along the Persian Gulf coast and around the Strait of Hormuz. This intact capture would let Iranian forces inspect the drone’s equipment, stored data and mission details, the Navy said in a statement on October 29.
According to the IRGC statement, these missions go beyond photographing military positions. They can measure air defence responses, detectability and system performance. Bringing the drone under control and landing it safely, therefore, gave Iran a chance to study the other side’s equipment and operating methods.
This incident occurred amidst brewing tensions between Iran and the United States over the Strait of Hormuz, which remains under the control of Iran as the standoff continues, according to the Iranian authorities.
According to Iranian authorities, progress depends on the US first stopping its interference and meeting its commitments, rather than offering new or reworked proposals that ignore Tehran’s demands, an Iranian media outlet, Voice of Emirates, states.
Iran has made repeated claims of capturing or downing US unmanned systems.
