HD Hyundai Unveils World’s First High-Pressure Ammonia Direct Injection Engine
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has accomplished a milestone in the eco-friendly shipbuilding industry with the development of the world’s first ammonia engine using a high-pressure direct injection method.
The engine, known as the HiMSEN Ammonia Dual-Fuel Engine (model: H22CDF-LA), has the potential to shape the future of zero-carbon marine and land-based power generation.
The company recently completed model-based class approval tests for the engine at its Engine Technology Center in Ulsan, Korea.
The successful trials were attended by representatives from seven major classification societies, including ABS, BV, DNV, KR, LR, NK, and RINA.
The model-based class approval allows for commercial production and global distribution of the ammonia engine, which promises to enhance fuel efficiency and greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
HD Hyundai’s new engine uses a high-pressure direct injection method, where ammonia is injected into compressed air within the combustion chamber, unlike previous low-pressure premixed ammonia engines.
The method improves output and fuel efficiency while reducing harmful emissions like nitrogen dioxide (N20).
The engine has been designed for marine propulsion, power generation, and land-based applications.
HD Hyundai overcame several technological challenges to develop this complex engine, including optimizing fuel spraying intervals to maximize combustion efficiency.
The engine has a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, and the company’s independently developed Integrated Scrubber technology has been applied to reduce ammonia concentrations.
An official from HD Hyundai said the development of this engine is an important step in expanding their eco-friendly engine lineup, positioning the company to lead the future eco-friendly shipbuilding market.
