Hanwha Defense USA, Hanwha Systems Co, and U.S.-based collaborative autonomy company HavocAI have entered into a partnership to jointly develop a 200-foot autonomous surface vessel (ASV) intended for future U.S. government use.

The companies said the agreement combines Hanwha’s shipbuilding and manufacturing capabilities with HavocAI’s collaborative autonomy technology.

The partnership aims to support the development and potential large-scale production of autonomous surface vessels for defence applications.

Hanwha is currently the only shipbuilder operating an active shipyard in the United States to enter into a joint agreement with an autonomous vessel technology company.

The Hanwha Philly Shipyard is being considered as a potential production site for the 200-foot ASV, subject to further evaluation.

HavocAI has recently strengthened its position in the defence sector after closing an $85 million funding round. The company has also publicly confirmed the sale of dozens of vessels to the U.S. Department of War.

Additionally, HavocAI has demonstrated its collaborative autonomy technology in GPS-denied environments, including demonstrations observed by Ukrainian officials.

Hanwha Defense USA indicated that the partnership brings together an allied defence manufacturer with established industrial scale and a software-focused defence technology company.

The company said the collaboration is intended to deliver autonomous surface vessels at scale for U.S. service members while also contributing to increased competition within the Department of War’s acquisition process.

HavocAI said the Department of War wants more vessels built faster, with better capabilities and at lower cost.

The company added that partnerships combining advanced technology with established global manufacturing infrastructure are key to meeting these demands.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the three companies will work jointly on the development of the autonomous surface vessels. This includes mass-production planning, system installation, technical development, and proposal preparation.
