Fire Breaks Out In Engine Room Of Dredger Near St. John River, 1 Injured
A fire broke out in the engine room of the MV Stuyvesant, a 340-foot Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger, at the St. John’s River entrance around 3:30 p.m. on November 2, 2024.
The incident necessitated a quick emergency response from multiple agencies, with the U.S. Coast Guard Station Mayport playing a key role.
To control the fire, the Coast Guard boat crews quickly coordinated with the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department (JFRD) and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO).
The Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department confirmed their involvement in the operation on social media, acknowledging the support of JSO marine units, Coast Guard personnel, and other local agencies, including the St. John’s River Harbor Pilots and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
During the emergency, one injured crew member from the Stuyvesant needed immediate medical attention. The Coast Guard brought the person ashore to Emergency Medical Services for further treatment.
The condition of the injured crew member has not been updated yet.
The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. The United States Coast Guard has launched an investigation to determine how it all started.
According to the reports, the vessel was near the Mayport Basin when the fire was first spotted. Further information has yet to be released by local authorities as the investigation continues.
