A tanker anchored about 23 nautical miles east of Fujairah has reported being hit by an unknown projectile, according to UKMTO.
The fire started in a laundry room, and then spread through the ship’s ventilation system into nearby sections, including berthing areas.
Officials have described the tanker as an “environmental bomb,” warning that the cargo could lead to a fire, explosion, or major pollution.
The operation was carried out by the HARC-NZKG team with support from the Coast Guard, following close monitoring of the vessel’s movements.
Both China and the Philippines claim the shoal. However, China has maintained effective control by keeping its coast guard vessels in the area.
