Ancient Port Discovered Underwater In Northeastern Libya
Archaeologists from the University of Warsaw found several shipwrecks on the seafloor in northeastern Libya, possibly the ruins of a once thriving harbour complex that was submerged by rising sea levels and seismic activity.
In 2024 and 2025, underwater archaeologists found remnants of an ancient port, including columns, roads, and ship anchors.
The researchers began excavations in the ancient Greek City of Ptolemais in Libya several years ago, but work was halted due to the civil war and political unrest in the country.
Still, they returned in 2023 and investigated both land and sea areas, which uncovered archaeological treasures and offered a glimpse into one of the biggest Greek cities in Cyrenaica.
They found amphorae in shallow waters just two and a half miles off the coast, and upon looking further, cargo remains, and many shipwrecks were seen scattered on the seabed.
Apart from these vessels, which never reached their destinations, they also saw traces of ancient maritime infrastructure that reinforce Libya’s status as a metropolis in the ancient Greek period.
They also recovered a bronze aequipondium, a part of a Roman balance scale filled with lead and shaped like a woman’s head.
They were also intrigued to find an amphora filled with crystallised wine that is currently being analysed in a laboratory.
The research team also found an ancient residential district and the house of a high-ranking state official.
A mask with a human face and many stone containers were also unearthed, leaving the team with questions like why were these items left outside his house?
Excavations in the neighbouring areas are ongoing as archaeologists expect to discover more exciting finds, providing a window into ancient Greek Libya.
