A tragic accident occurred at the MHI Ship Repair yard in Norfolk, Virginia, killing two workers on October 23, 2024. The incident happened around 7:45 a.m. at the Warrenton Avenue facility near the Portsmouth Marine Terminal.

Norfolk police and fire rescue personnel rushed to the scene, where they found one worker dead and another badly injured. Despite being taken to the hospital immediately, the injured worker was soon declared dead by the doctors.

The shipyard’s operator, Marine Hydraulics International (MHI), mourned over the deaths of the two workers. A company representative said that their thoughts and prayers are with the families of those dead and others affected by this incident.

MHI reiterated its commitment to safety and agreed to fully cooperate with local authorities in investigating the cause of the accident.

Witnesses at the yard said that other crew members on the ship were sent home for the day after the accident. Although the vessel’s name has not been revealed, local media captured footage shows police activity near the stern ramp of a large sealift ship.

MHI Ship Repair, a Titan division and the successor to West Coast shipbuilder Vigor Industrial, provides commercial and government repair services. The facility employs around 500 people and provides high-quality and cost-effective services.

MHI has announced that they will not provide any further comments while the investigation is underway.
