A cargo ship loaded with scrap metal caught fire at Poland’s Gdansk Port on Thursday evening.

Firefighting teams arrived at the scene, comprising 17 members are flames seemed to spread inside the cargo hold containing the material.

Firefighters fought the blaze from multiple positions, including from the waterway alongside the ship and also from the deck.

Efforts are ongoing to remove the burning scrap metal from the deep hold using machinery and other equipment.

Emergency responders say that access to the seat of the fire is difficult because the cargo hold is quite deep and packed with scrap metal, which is also kept in the lower sections.

Given the dense smoke, it remains difficult to see the extent to which the fire has spread.

“The source of the fire is unknown at this time; it may be oily scrap metal or other flammable materials found inside,” said Senior Capt. Radosław Gburzynski of the State Fire Service.

Fortunately, nobody was injured when the fire started.
