Turkiye Reveals Its First Indigenous Low-Frequency Active Submarine Sonar System

Turkish defence industry company Aselsan has developed the nation’s first over-the-horizon indigenous submarine defence warfare sonar.

The system is part of an effort to employ entirely domestic technology to expand the Navy's competence in underwater detection capabilities.

The Low-Frequency Active Sonar System was developed under the Presidency of Defense Industries in line with the needs of the Naval Forces Command.

It can detect and locate threats such as submarines over long distances, ensuring critical underwater situational awareness.

With its adjustable depth and active and passive sonar capabilities, it enhances the strength of the Turkish navy.

It is the first and only towed active sonar system that emits acoustic signals through its active sonar components, designed and produced domestically.

The system can also identify threats such as torpedoes by listening to ambient noises in passive sonar mode.

It also activates countermeasure equipment to eliminate risks when it detects a torpedo threat.

Haluk Görgün, head of the Presidency of Defense Industries, said the system was a gift to Turkiye on the 109th anniversary of the Çanakkale naval victory.
