World’s First-Ever Ship-to-Ship Ammonia Transfer at Anchorage Successfully Completed
World’s First Ship-to-Ship Ammonia Transfer Successfully Completed at the Port of Dampier, Australia.
On September 14, 2024, ammonia was transferred between two ships, the Green Pioneer and Navigator Global, in a groundbreaking operation.
The Green Pioneer, a 35,000 cbm ammonia carrier, and Navigator Global, a 22,500 cbm carrier, handled 4,000 cbm of ammonia each.
This trial strengthens Pilbara’s position as a low-GHG emission ammonia bunkering hub, making strides toward decarbonizing maritime fuel.
This pilot project advances Pilbara's potential to establish a low-GHG shipping route, potentially requiring up to 1.5 million tonnes of ammonia by 2035.
The operation included extensive safety measures such as emergency release couplings, shutdown devices, and nitrogen purging procedures.
The success of this operation marks a major milestone in advancing ammonia as a viable and sustainable maritime fuel.
