USS Nimitz was named in honour of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, while Shandong Aircraft Carrier is named after the Shandong province of China.
Shandong was built by the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry in Dalian, Liaoning province of China, while USS Nimitz was constructed by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Virginia.
USS Nimitz was commissioned on 3rd May 1975 by President Gerald R. Ford. Shandong was commissioned into the Chinese Navy on 17th Dec 2019.
While USS Nimitz is the oldest American aircraft carrier still in service, Shandong is China’s 1st domestically built aircraft carrier.
Officially designated as Type 002, the Shandong can displace around 66,000-70,000 tonnes, while USS Nimitz boasts a 100,000-ton displacement.
USS Nimitz is 332.8 m long and 76.8 m wide, while Shandong is 304.5 m long, with a 75 m beam.
Shandong can carry around 44 aircraft, while USS Nimitz can accommodate 90 fixed-wing and helicopters.
USS Nimitz is powered by 2 nuclear reactors providing it with a speed of more than 31.5 knots, while Shandong also features an advanced propulsion system, allowing it to achieve a top speed of 31 knots.
Shandong can stay at sea for 45 days and cover 10,000 nautical miles without being refuelled. USS Nimitz is nuclear-powered and can operate for over 20 years without refuelling, with a service life of 50 years.
