US Navy Submarine Arrives In Guantanamo Bay After Russian Warships Reach Cuba
According to the US Southern Command, the USS Helena's stop at Guantanamo Bay is part of a routine port visit.
The arrival coincides with Russian military drills in the Caribbean, involving a nuclear-powered submarine, a frigate, a rescue tug, and an oil tanker.
Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh stated that while these drills are taken seriously, they do not pose a threat to the US.
These exercises follow Joe Biden's authorization for Ukraine to use US weapons against Russia, prompting a warning from Vladimir Putin about potential "asymmetrical steps."
US officials anticipate that Russian vessels will remain in the Caribbean throughout the summer, possibly making stops in Venezuela.
Russia has long-standing alliances with Venezuela and Cuba, with periodic visits to the Caribbean since 2008.
