The Navy has confirmed the discovery of the missing World War II submarine USS Albacore off Japan.

The long-lost submarine, lost at sea on November 7, 1944, has been found after almost 80 years.

Albacore had one of the most successful combat records of all Navy submarines in World War II.

USS Albacore was a Gato-class submarine which served in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II.

It was built by the Electric Boat Company in Groton, CT and commissioned on June 1, 1942.

She conducted 11 war patrols and is credited with 10 confirmed enemy vessel sinkings.

She was lost in 1944, probably sunk by a mine off northern Hokkaidō on 7 November.

The wreck is the final resting place of sailors who gave their lives in defense of the nation.
