Largest Sailing Cargo Ship To Carry Green Coffee Beans From Colombia To Canada
Canadian coffee company Café William has embarked on a groundbreaking voyage to bring green coffee beans to Quebec using wind-powered sailing ships.
Partnering with TransOceanic Wind Transport (TOWT), Café William is leading the charge to decarbonize shipping with wind-powered cargo vessels.
This voyage marks the largest sailing cargo ship of the 21st century and the first TOWT journey to Canada—an important moment in sustainable shipping.
The ship is carrying the equivalent of 50 shipping containers of green coffee beans, including beans from the ANEI Cooperative in Colombia.
By scaling up from its 2023 trial, Café William is moving toward zero-emission coffee shipping, proving wind power is a viable alternative to fossil fuels.
Café William is a leader in importing organic and Fairtrade coffee, ensuring fair compensation and sustainable livelihoods for farmers.
Once in Canada, the beans will be roasted at Café William’s Quebec facility, home to the world’s first 100% electric industrial coffee roaster.
