The Indian Navy has commissioned the fifth Kalvari class submarine Vagir on 23 January, 2023.
The submarines are being built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai in collaboration with M/s Naval Group, France.
The Indian Navy has already commissioned four Kalvari class submarines.
On 01 Nov 1973, the erstwhile Vagir was commissioned and carried out numerous operational missions, including deterrent patrols.
After serving the nation for about three decades, INS Vagir was decommissioned on 07 Jan 2001.
In its new avatar, the submarine, named 'Vagir', has the distinction of having the shortest build time among indigenously manufactured submarines to date.
It is capable of carrying ou anti-surface warfare, minelaying, and surveillance missions that will strengthen the Indian Navy's capability to protect India's maritime interests.
