President Droupadi Murmu will launch the frigate "Vindhyagiri" on August 17.

The frigate is part of Project 17A and is being built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited in Kolkata.

It is named after a mountain range in Karnataka and pays tribute to the previous INS Vindhyagiri.

The old INS Vindhyagiri served from 1981 to 2012, participating in challenging operations and multinational exercises.

The new Vindhyagiri symbolizes India's naval heritage and commitment to indigenous defense capabilities.

Project 17A includes four ships by MDL and three ships by GRSE, designed by Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau.

These frigates have improved stealth features, advanced weapons, sensors, and platform management systems.

Vindhyagiri's launch aligns with India's pursuit of embracing its naval heritage while advancing indigenous defense capabilities.
