In A First, EU Sanctions Chinese Firms Supplying Drones & Military Equipment To Russia

In a groundbreaking move, the European Union imposes its 15th sanctions package, targeting Russia’s shadow fleet and Chinese firms aiding its military.

These sanctions aim to weaken Russia's economy and disrupt its war efforts in Ukraine, with a focus on aging vessels transporting oil illegally.

Around 600 to 800 "shadow fleet" ships operate outside regulations, helping Russia bypass global price caps and earn billions from oil exports.

For the first time, the EU sanctions Chinese companies accused of supplying drones and military equipment to Russia.

This package adds 45–50 tankers, 30 entities, and over 50 individuals to the EU’s ever-expanding sanctions list.

Despite intensified measures, challenges remain. The shadow fleet and loopholes continue to undermine global efforts to curb Russia’s war funding.

The sanctions package extends exemptions for the Czech Republic while preparing for stricter enforcement under Poland’s leadership in 2025.

As sanctions tighten, the EU’s focus on disrupting Russia’s economic and military strategies marks a critical step in reshaping the global response to war.
