Germany Launches Its First Fully Electric Ferry
Germany has taken a major step toward sustainable maritime transport with the launch of its first fully electric ferry, the E-Kat.
Built by Damen Shipyards, this 32-meter-long catamaran can carry 150 passengers and operates emission-free between Norddeich and Norderney.
Powered by two 600 kW electric motors and advanced batteries from EST-Floattech, the ferry can complete an 11-km round trip on a single charge.
Charging is seamlessly integrated into operations—28 minutes at port allows the ferry to recharge using renewable shore power.
The E-Kat was transported from Rotterdam to Germany, where it underwent rigorous testing, proving its efficiency and reliability.
Operator AG Reederei Norden-Frisia has also installed solar panels at ports to ensure the ferry runs on clean, renewable energy.z
With up to eight trips daily during peak season, the E-Kat is more than a ferry—it’s a blueprint for the future of sustainable marine travel.
