Full-Scale Testing Of World’s 1st Ammonia-Powered Two-Stroke Engine Begins

MAN Energy Solutions has launched full-scale testing of the world’s first ammonia-powered two-stroke engine, a groundbreaking step for greener shipping.

This ME-LGIA engine runs primarily on ammonia, producing 95% of its energy from this cleaner fuel, with only 5% from pilot oil.

After a year of successful single-cylinder tests, the team is now focused on critical areas like combustion, emissions, and engine tuning.

Testing is expected to continue until mid-2025, with strict safety protocols ensuring the engine’s reliability for global maritime use.

Global interest in ammonia-powered ships is growing rapidly, with 27 new vessels already on order for delivery in 2026-2027.

Current ammonia-fueled vessels include a converted offshore supply vessel, a tugboat, and a demonstrator vessel showcasing the potential of this fuel.

MAN is leading the charge, but competitors like Wartsila and WinGD are racing to develop their own ammonia-powered engines.

Ammonia-powered engines could revolutionize maritime sustainability, marking a significant step toward decarbonizing the global shipping industry.
