China Unveils the World's Largest Wind Turbine—Here's Why It Matters

Dongfang Electric Corporation has just launched the world’s largest offshore wind turbine, a groundbreaking 26 MW unit, showcasing China’s rapid advancements in renewable energy.

This 26 MW giant is made up of over 30,000 precision-engineered parts, from its blades and generators to cutting-edge control systems, setting a new global standard in wind power.

With a hub height of 185 meters, its wind-swept area covers the size of 10.5 football fields, generating enough clean electricity to power 55,000 homes annually.

This turbine is built with advanced anti-typhoon technology, proven to withstand extreme weather like the Category 17 super typhoon “Makar,” ensuring resilience in all conditions.

Utilizing third-generation semi-direct drive technology, it increases torque by 67% over earlier models, drastically improving efficiency and reducing operational stress.

By integrating frequency conversion technology, the turbine boosts energy generation efficiency by more than 2%, operating for over 4,000 hours a year in ideal wind conditions.

One of these turbines can generate 100 million kilowatt hours annually, saving over 30,000 tons of coal and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by more than 80,000 tons.

Dongfang Electric’s latest innovation is part of China’s ongoing mission to meet its dual carbon goals, further solidifying its leadership in global renewable energy technology.
