Canada Designates Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps As Terrorist Group

On June 19, 2024, Canada officially designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist group.

This action aligns Canada with the United States, which made a similar declaration in 2019, and the United Kingdom, which plans to follow suit.

The Canadian government emphasized its commitment to combating terrorist financing, sending a clear message against the IRGC’s activities.

The IRGC, a powerful military force in Iran, manages the Quds Force and reports directly to Iran's Supreme Leader.

The Iranian regime has shown a disregard for human rights and a tendency to destabilize global order.

The designation mandates Canadian financial institutions to freeze IRGC assets and prohibits financial transactions with the organization.

Relations between Canada and Iran have been tense, especially after the 2020 downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 by the IRGC.
