Barge Runs Aground Near French Coast After Breaking Tow In Storm Darragh

The AMT Challenger barge ran aground near the French coast after breaking its tow during Storm Darragh—a dramatic two-day battle against nature.

It all began when the tug Boka Glacier lost its towline amidst raging seas. The barge drifted uncontrollably, crossing from British into French waters.

Salvage tugs fought ferocious winds of up to 40 knots in repeated attempts to secure the barge but were defeated by the relentless storm.

By Sunday, the barge had come dangerously close to the cliffs of Seine-Maritime. At 1:00 p.m., it ran aground on a sandy beach.

Authorities acted swiftly to stabilise the barge, activating ballast pumps and confirming minimal environmental risk despite diesel on board.

Beach access was banned, and a safety perimeter was enforced after steep cliffs near the site claimed lives earlier this year.

With rough weather persisting, salvage operations are delayed. Officials remain vigilant, ready to respond to any pollution risk.

The AMT Challenger’s grounding is a stark reminder of nature’s power, as authorities and salvage teams prepare for the next critical steps.
