30 Sailors & Marines Suffer Injuries During Training Exercise Off Florida
Dozens of sailors and Marines were injured after an at-sea mishap during a training event off the Florida coast.
30 Marines and sailors were injured, and 5 were taken to Savannah Memorial University Medical Center for further care.
4 of the 5 sailors were discharged from the hospital, and 1 sailor is still under medical care.
The accident involved 2 of the Navy’s LCACs, 91-foot-long, air-cushioned vessels that move troops and material from ship to shore.
Marines with 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and sailors assigned to the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group were involved.
The Navy’s statement did not say what training the LCACs undertook before the mishap.
The Navy did not address the nature of the injuries & when asked, repeated the statement it gave originally.
Those with minor injuries were treated aboard the amphibious assault ship Wasp and the amphibious transport dock ship New York.
