130-Year-Old Wreck of a Historic Schooner Found in Lake Michigan

Maritime historians & the Wisconsin Underwater Archaeology Association discovered the wreck of Margaret A. Muir, a 130-foot schooner, 50 feet under water near Algoma, Wisconsin.

They contacted Wisconsin’s state maritime archaeologist, to photograph the 130-Year-Old wreck and create a 3D model.

The ship was in poor condition, with collapsed decks and detached sides. However, some parts, like its anchors and hand pumps, were still intact.

The team plans to nominate the wreck for the National Register of Historic Places.

Built in 1872, the Margaret A. Muir had a 21-year career, carrying cargo across the Great Lakes. It sank while transporting 4375 barrels of salt.

The ship met its fate in a storm with 50 mph winds. Captain Clow tried to reach the nearest port, but the ship sank, taking his beloved dog with it.

The 7 crew members escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by locals. Captain Clow was deeply affected by the loss of his faithful companion.
