Watch: 3D Simulation of Sewol Ferry Fatal Passage

Here’s 3D simulation of the SEWOL fatal passage, as recorded by the Korean marine authorities using AIS.

The replay has been modified to present correct vessel heading – original data suffered from the vessel’s gyroscope’s failure, which shown the vessel in incorrect orientation after completing the turn. The officially quoted reason for this was a gyroscope power failure.

The unfortunate ferry that capsized in April 2014, left 304 people, most of them school children, dead or missing.
