Video: Oil Tanker Explodes In Thai Waters, Blows Up Worker’s Leg 500 m Away
On Tuesday, January 17 afternoon, an oil tanker in the Muang district of Thailand experienced an explosion that left four welders injured and took one person’s life. The vessel Smooth Sea 22 was docked on the Mae Klong river when the explosion happened.
It resulted in a fire onboard the 6500 deadweight tonnes tanker, which 40 workers were repairing – 10 on the ship and 30 on the banks as part of its regular maintenance plan. Six of them have gone missing after the incident.
The injured 4 contain 3 Myanmarese welders and one person from Thailand.Â

The impact was so huge that the neighbouring houses’ window panes shattered. The explosion blew up the dead person’s leg 500 meters away from the oil tanker, carrying 20000 litres of diesel and 2500 litres of fuel oil.Â
The labour protection office of the province will investigate if the Occupational Health Safety Act was violated, said Niyom Songkaew, the Labour Protection and Welfare department chief.Â
The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Provincial Office is overseeing the rescue operation and looking for the cause of the blast, which is yet to be ascertained.Â
