MS Høydal – World’s First LNG Powered Ship

The largest fish feed carrier, MS Hoydal is also the fist LNG Ship in the World. Ingeniously planned and meticulously built, MS Hoydal LNG powered ship offers the most optimum answer to the problem of emanations of toxic gases at the sea.

The Norwegian vessel gains its reputation for being the foremost vessel of its kind to be operated fully by way of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), a fuel source so clean that it reduces the emanations of noxious gases like NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) and

CO2 (Carbon Dioxide). The LNG Ship’s highly regarded initiation into the maritime domain is the result of a pioneering collaboration between four of Europe’s leading maritime engineering conglomerates and the staunch support provided by Norwegian governmental authorities.

The classification society, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) has classified the LNG powered ship as being highly viable in its nature of operations vis-à-vis the maritime ecosystem. This has resulted in the first LNG powered cargo ship gaining immense accolades not only for its unique application of engineering science and systems but also for the hard-work and zealous efforts behind the ensuring the viability of such an application. At present, this LNG powered ship is the only ship under the piscatorial farming sector to have been awarded such a high classification distinction.

MS Hoydal: Features and Specifications

  • The vessel is operated by the Norwegian maritime corporate BioMar to transit feedstock produced its piscatorial manufactory to piscatorial farms located at the Northern provinces of the country.
  • The LNG ship is under the ownership of the Nordnorsk Shipkonsult (NSK) conglomerate.

The construction of the vessel was according to the engineering designs provided by the NSK conglomerate, one of the four collaborators aforementioned in the vessel’s brilliantly projected pioneering venture.

  •  Built at the Turkish shipbuilding yard located at Tershan, the vessel’s unique engine systems have been provided by the Rolls Royce Corporation.

The engine system of the vessel is estimated to generate over 1,600 kilowatts (Kw) of energy and helps in the reduction of emanations of NOx by around ninety percent and CO2 by at least twenty-five percent.

  •  Measuring around seventy meters lengthwise with a breadth of around sixteen meters  the LNG powered ship is known to touch operational speeds up to a maximum of 14 knots.
  • Built at a cost of about two billion in terms of Norwegian currency (Krona), the first LNG powered cargo ship has a load carrying capacitance of over 2,000 tonnes and a hoisting capacitance of around fifty tonnes.

MS Hoydal is equipped with the world’s best technological devices and gadgets that provide great navigation aid in its routine operations. The LNG powered ship work-ability and high degree of functionality is further accentuated because of the simplest fact that it offers the most tangible of demonstrations possible with respect to oceanic ecosystem preservation, thus giving great respite to the constant sense of threat plaguing the maritime industry.
