What is Equasis Shipping Database?
Equasis is an online database which helps promote the exchange of information in the shipping industry. As a massive information system, it provides details about the performance of ships, maritime organizations, and maritime transport companies from both public and private sources.
Equasis not only increases transparency but also provides scattered and difficult-to-access information in one place.
It is a non-profit which was formed by the European Commission and the French Maritime Association to promote the exchange of unbiased information. It was launched in the year 1997 and went live in 2000.
Since then, it has collated and made available, maritime information, free of any charge. It offers ship safety and quality-related data about the entire world merchant fleet on the internet. You just need to register to get the information. Equasis has garnered an international reputation and is seen as the most trusted open source of information on the world shipping fleet.
In all the years of its operations, Equasis has transparently provided factual information and allowed its users to form their opinions about ships and ship operators. Through this, it has greatly contributed to improving maritime safety and the quality of ships.
Today, it has data on over 85,000 ships and all ships in service above 100 GT can be found here. The detailed information comes from over 50 data providers that contribute information to the Equasis database regularly.
These include IMO, Seven Port State Control regimes, EMSA, P & I Clubs, Classification Societies, industry associations, data suppliers, and companies which share data related to trade and commerce. EMSA hosts and maintains the Management Unit of Equasis.
The main goals of Equasis
The main reasons behind setting up a system like Equasis were:
- To reduce substandard shipping by providing safety-related information on ships
- To form a non-commercial system that can be used by people all over the world
- To make an international database covering the whole world fleet
- To seek active cooperation from all maritime authorities around the world
- To collect and disseminate quality and safety-related information regarding the world’s merchant fleet in one place
- To provide both accurate ship characteristics and ship management information
- To provide information on maritime transport companies
Though France and the European Commission mainly share the cost of developing and running Equasis, financial support is also provided by maritime authorities of the United Kingdom, Spain, Singapore, and Japan.
