A total of 156 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships were reported to the ICC IMB’s Piracy Reporting Centre in the first nine months of 2018 compared to 121 for the same period in 2017.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) organised a recent meeting in Manila to discuss piracy and maritime crime in the Sulu and the Celebes Sea.
No piracy incident was reported. There was also no report of abduction of crew in the Sulu-Celebes Seas and no hijacking of ships for theft of oil cargo reported in August 2018.
A total of 14 incidents were reported in Asia during January-March 2018 compared to 27 incidents during the same period in 2017.
