Yanmar Technology Initiates Hydrogen Fueled 4 Stroke Engine Development
The Japanese Yanmar Group firm, Yanmar Power Technology (abbreviated the YPT), has reportedly embarked on the building of a hydrogen-fueled four-stroke advanced high-speed engine to generate power for coastal vessels in Japan as part of the zero-emission vessel demonstration experiment of Nippon Foundation.
The engine runs on hydrogen as a fuel and does not emit CO2 during combustion. Alongside hydrogen engine development, the firm Yanmar Power Technology will be working on creating a hydrogen engine-focused hybrid electric propulsion vessel that combines hydrogen engine generators along with batteries.
This unique vessel design encompasses a container unit hydrogen power generation system on the upper deck. Uyeno TransTech, one of the shipping majors with the Uyeno Group, would be responsible for developing and constructing the vessel. To aid the transition toward zero emissions in maritime operations, the YPT aims to create a pilot ignition engine that uses a small amount of pilot biofuel, hydrogen co-combustion, and a hydrogen-only spark ignition engine.
The firm also plans to begin its onshore verification examinations in 2024 with a 6-cylinder hydrogen engine that boasts pilot ignition to conduct its verification operations by 2026. YPT will also conduct onshore verification trials with the spark ignition hydrogen-based engine.
By 2030, they will likely achieve their zero-emission goal for coastal vessels by boosting the adoption of hydrogen energy-oriented propulsion systems. In 2021, Yanmar Power Technology, with Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Japan Engine Corporation, made a consortium of Japan-based engine manufacturers to pursue the joint development of hydrogen-fueled marine engines dedicated to coastal and ocean-going vessels.
The trio desired to be dominant in next-gen hydrogen engine technologies. In 2023, YPT unveiled its hydrogen fuel cell system for decarbonizing the maritime industry. Very recently, the firm made the first-ever delivery of its commercialized system.
