World’s First Full Scale Carbon Capture Retrofit On LPG Carrier Secured By Seatrium

Seatrium Limited has obtained the world’s first full-scale, turnkey Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) retrofit project on a Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) carrier from Solvang ASA, Norway, in a ground-breaking step towards maritime decarbonisation. The project demonstrates Seatrium’s dedication to environmental sustainability and is a significant step towards lowering carbon emissions in the shipping sector.

A 7MW Wärtsilä Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) system will be installed on Solvang’s ethylene carrier, Clipper Eris, as part of a retrofit scheduled to start in the third quarter of this year. The goal of the new system that uses amine cleaning technology is to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the vessel’s primary engine exhaust gas by 70%. Everything from liquefaction to storage on board the ship will be included in the value chain for managing CO2.

Seatrium’s responsibilities span the whole project, including technical engineering, procurement, integrating the carbon collection and compression/storage system, and fundamental design. The fleet director of Solvang ASA, Mr. Tor Ask, highlighted Seatrium’s experience with decarbonisation retrofit projects while expressing the company’s satisfaction with the partnership.

Seatrium Repairs and Upgrades Executive Vice President Mr. Alvin Gan applauded Solvang for entrusting them with this significant project. He emphasised Seatrium’s dedication to promoting environmental sustainability by employing cutting-edge technologies.

Seatrium is a significant participant in the industry’s provision of lower-carbon solutions because of its engineering skills and concentration on maritime decarbonisation. Seatrium has provided more than 500 sustainability-related solutions, such as environmental regulatory work and low-carbon retrofits, since 2018.

Solvang ASA, well-known for its commitment to safe and efficient LPG and petrochemical transportation, sees this agreement as a vital step toward a lower carbon future. The effective installation of the CCS retrofit on Clipper Eris will increase the opportunity for a wider deployment of this technology in Solvang’s fleet, including new builds.
