World’s First Floating Wind Innovation Centre Opens In Scotland
The first-ever Floating Wind Innovation Center in the world was opened in Aberdeen on Monday, March 18, by the Rt Hon. Humza Yousaf MSP, Scotland’s First Minister.
The £9 million National Floating Wind Innovation Centre (FLOWIC), created by ORE Catapult and ETZ Limited, is well situated in Aberdeen’s Energy Transition Zone to promote floating offshore wind technology developments.
Scotland is committed to utilizing its offshore wind potential for economic growth and environmental sustainability, as evidenced by this initiative, which the Scottish Government and Innovate UK fund.
Floating offshore wind has enormous economic potential, with over 19GW of potential projects in the works through initiatives like ScotWind Leasing and the INTOG leasing round. It also offers a chance to transfer expertise and information from the oil and gas industry to renewable energy, supporting a Just Transition.
According to industry estimates, floating offshore wind might produce over £43.9 billion in gross value added (GVA) and more than 29,000 jobs in the UK by 2050.
FLOWIC is a centre for businesses to create and de-risk critical technologies necessary for the industry’s continued development.

FLOWIC’s cutting-edge facilities, which include a motion simulator, dynamic cable flex fatigue rig, anchor test rig, and virtual reality studio, allow for the thorough testing and validation of floating offshore wind systems and components.
First Minister Humza Yousaf reaffirmed Scotland’s commitment to becoming a leader in floating wind technology and highlighted the collaborative spirit propelling the offshore wind industry forward during the opening ceremony.
The CEO of ORE Catapult, Andrew Jamieson, emphasized the critical role that FLOWIC plays in commercializing floating offshore wind and the substantial global market demand for this technology.
The Chairman of ETZ Ltd., Sir Ian Wood, emphasized the importance of FLOWIC in establishing the Northeast region of Scotland as a leader in floating wind innovation worldwide. He highlighted the centre’s contribution to job creation, strengthening the regional supply chain, and lowering energy prices associated with floating wind projects.
During the inaugural event, the First Minister discussed with professionals from ORE Catapult and business leaders the possible influence of FLOWIC on the offshore renewable energy market and how it may help Scotland achieve its energy transition objectives.
