The world’s biggest and most eco-friendly car carrier, Hoegh Aurora, will visit the Port of Hamburg, confirming the Hamburg Declaration on Decarbonisation of Global Shipping.

Hoegh Aurora loaded its cargo in Japan and South Korea and then left for Europe. She visited many ports in Belgium, the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, etc before Hamburg, Germany.

In the Hamburg Port, Germany’s biggest facility and the 3rd largest in Europe, the company will organise a grand event for several clients and partners to celebrate this move towards mindful, eco-friendly shipping.

The ship can accommodate 9100 cars and carry electric vehicles on its 14 decks. It has solar panels on the topmost deck, which decreases electricity production from generators by more than 30%. She can also utilise electric shore power, eliminating emissions while berthed at ports.

It is the first vessel of Hoegh Autoliners Aurora Class which will have 12 ships. Two vessels, the Hoegh Aurora and Hoegh Borealis are operational and the other 10 will be delivered by 2028.

These ships will have engines built to run on ammonia and will cut greenhouse gas emissions per car transported by up to 58% from the present industry average.

Hoegh Autoliners operates the most sustainable Pure Car and Truck Carrier Fleet and aims to reduce carbon emissions through its Aurora Class Ships.

Additionally, with this class, the company is increasing the demand for ammonia as a zero-carbon maritime fuel.

The company has collaborated with many of the world’s prominent ammonia-producing firms to ensure the availability of green ammonia, including Yara Clean Ammonia, Sumitomo Corporation, Norwegian North Ammonia etc.

The company aims to sail its ships on at least 100,000 metric tons of green ammonia by 2030.
