Watch: 154-Foot Sunken Superyacht Raised From Sardinian Waters For Scrapping
Italy’s coast guard has lifted the sunken superyacht Atina from the seabed off Sardinia’s coast and plans to move it to Piombino for scrapping.
The recovery ends a months-long operation that began in August after a fire sank the luxury yacht near Olbia, a popular resort on Sardinia’s northeastern shore.
The 154-foot Atina caught fire on August 10, necessitating an immediate evacuation. All 16 passengers and crew made it to the shore safely and without injuries.
According to local media, the passengers included Turkish nationals along with Atina’s suspected owner, Serkan Borancili, the Turkish founder of a well-known delivery company.

Although the yacht contained about 13,000 gallons of fuel, authorities reported no major pollution or leakage in the surrounding waters.
The vessel’s final resale value before the accident was estimated at $18 million, including the cost of a recent refit. Italian authorities removed the wreck to clear the waters off Olbia because of Atina’s shallow resting depth.
The crane barge Conquest MB1 from Dutch Offshore performed the operation, which involved reorienting the vessel using anchor chains and the barge’s crane. After days of preparation, Atina was successfully lifted from the water and ready for transport.
According to Superyacht Times, the authorities plan to conduct a seabed scan at the wreck site as part of an ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire.
The vessel’s rescue and disposal, which followed safety and environmental regulations, were completed without any complications, ensuring that the coastal waters remain clean and safe for marine life and visitors to the region.
