US Navy Unveils New Robotics Warfare Specialist Rating
The US Navy launched a new robotics warfare rating to supervise the robotic and autonomous system operations. This rating, famous as the Robotics Warfare Specialist, or in short as RW, will operate passive and active payload systems as well as sensors while maintaining the robotics systems, which weren’t recognized in a naval administrative message, or what is called NAVADMIN, declaring the new rating.
Those who convert to the robotics warfare rating will come from those previously or currently assigned to the billets in divisions of unmanned vehicles and those with appropriate and applicable Navy-listed classification codes.
The number of sailors assigned to this rating is still unknown. Community requirements as well as employment will decide the manning numbers, per a Navy fact sheet.
Requests for conversion from active duty sailors in the grades of E-4 to E-9 will be accepted, and commands will work with the immediate superior in command and enlist community manager to facilitate the application process.
For E-5 and E-6 sailors, the robotics warfare advancement test will start in September. In 2025, higher grades will be subject to the examination and screening board. After their current tour ends, sailors will move the robotics warfare community — if they haven’t already — into a converted billet.
The Navy Education and Training Command has been working on a training pipeline specific to robotic warfare rating, and the Navy is also expecting it to open to incoming sailors in FY26. The Navy is going to open the rating to the sailors in the Reserves at a later time.
